Spring and Renewed Hope

Hello September!!!

Facebook reminded me that it’s now officially Spring in Australia (as well as in all other temperate areas in the Southern Hemisphere). Even before we left for the Philippines, I’ve seen new signs of life in the once naked trees that surrendered their leaves to Winter. I’m excited to come back and see my favorite Jacaranda trees in full bloom!

But what excites me more is the renewed hope that this new season brings. It has been a very difficult week for the Poblete family, with Mama Len being confined in the ICU due to her pulmonary hypertension and a host of other medical conditions, which resulted to her being asleep for a good 5 days.

The only times previously when I’ve seen members of the family cry were during weddings, and those were happy tears. It was my first time to witness them shed tears out of sorrow and despair, but we thank God because we can run to His throne during times like this. As my brother-in-law, Dino, pointed out – as we wait, our mind becomes a battlefield when fear and doubt constantly creep in. Sometimes the feeling of helplessness can be overwhelming, when you know that things are beyond your control.

In saying this, we do take comfort in the fact that God IS in control. And He makes all things work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

We also praise God for the daily miracles He’s allowing us to witness. It’s not the fast recovery we’ve all been yearning for, and every day is a struggle that refines our patience. From being in a partial comatose state, Mama can now open her eyes, nod her head, squeeze her hands, and raise her feet in response to our questions. Her mind is alert and active, her spirit is strong but her body is just weak.

We long to see her get well enough to be extubated, to be transferred to a normal ward, to be sent home, and finally to get her normal life back.

Mama Len loves life, and there is so much more to look forward to! Holding her first grandson, witnessing her last child tie the knot, waving at kangaroos during her Aussie Roadtrip when she visits us, watching her grandchildren grow and her family multiply, and a lot more!

Nothing is too difficult for the Lord, and if He wills it, this will all come to pass. For now, we continue to hope in the Lord, who is sovereign over all. We also remind ourselves that all suffering in this world is just temporary, and we are after all made for a different place.

Because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, we can rely on this blessed hope for a new heaven and a new earth.

In the book of Revelation, chapter 21, it says:

3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[b] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

As we continue to hope and look forward to that day when God will make all things new once and for all, for now I’ll rejoice in this new day that the Lord has made. Happy Spring!
